What our clients say
5.0 stars across 200+ Google reviews
“I wanted a more current pair of trousers to go with an existing dinner jacket. The service and the quality of the made-to-measure work are remarkable! Great patience and profound, helpful expertise during cloth selection, and a perfect fit at the fitting — spontaneous and even right on the spot. Compared with industrially made designer clothing, the work is actually relatively affordable.”
„Came to get a custom made shirt. Egon was very polite and took his time to explain everything and was also very thorough. The catalog size is really impressive with very good quality materials.“
“I visited Egon with my wife-to-be to have a pair of trousers and a shirt made … The advice was outstanding, everything fits perfectly, the cloth looks even better than on the small swatch in the book — and Egon is thoroughly likeable and professional.”
“A wonderful suit was made for my husband’s wedding. He translated my husband’s wishes perfectly and paid attention to every detail. Value for money is entirely fair … In two shops before this one, the advice I received was considerably worse.”
“From the first welcome to the final result, I felt in the best of hands at all times. The advice was highly professional, knowledgeable and pleasantly unobtrusive — they listened closely and responded to my wishes and my style … a level of service that has become rare these days.”
“Impressive quality and excellent service. Egon, Marc and the team made my wedding suit and truly made everything possible — the result exceeded all expectations, and the process was an experience in itself.”
„I cannot but praise the level of detail and care that Egon and his team put on serving my intent. We went together through different options step by step, perfectly guided by his recommendations. I ordered a made-to-measure suit and two shirts — the result was impeccable. I will undoubtedly come back for more.“
“Egon convinces with outstanding craftsmanship and a passion for his métier. The advice is as knowledgeable as it is individual, and the execution of his work shows the highest precision. Alongside classic bespoke he also offers made-to-measure — always with a fine sense of style and fit.”
„I got a (women’s) pantsuit made, with all sorts of personalized elements that are just not going to be available off the rack. Also, the pants actually fit, which is not a thing that happens to me. All for substantially less than what I’d have paid at home.“
„Egon made me an absolutely gorgeous suit for my wedding. The whole experience was marvelous! He has an insane collection of fabrics to choose from. He guided me thoroughly through the process of selecting every detail. And everything for an absolutely fair price. Highly recommended!“
Frequently asked questions
What distinguishes full bespoke from made-to-measure?
In full bespoke, an individual pattern is constructed from scratch for every client — based on more than 30 body measurements and adjusted to posture, movement and physical particularities. At the first appointment we take measurements and define pattern, style and cloth together. From this we make a trial garment, used at the first fitting to refine fit and proportions. The forward fitting is then held in the final cloth — the garment is already assembled, but only with rough basting stitches, so that final adjustments to the pattern remain possible. The structural work is then carried out by hand: horsehair canvas and cloth are joined across the entire forepart — above all over the chest — with thousands of hand stitches. This hand-padding shapes the wearer’s individual chest contour directly into the canvas; every stitch forms part of the chest to the actual body. Around 80 hours of work go into a two-piece suit that is developed from the ground up together with the client.
Our made-to-measure line, by contrast, is based on proven block patterns which we have refined across more than 1,000 realised patterns. These are precisely adjusted to your measurements and made in full-canvas construction: the horsehair canvas is sewn in loosely, not glued, and padded by machine — a clean, even result with noticeably more flexibility than any fused garment. The cloth selection is the same as in full bespoke. Try-on garments are pinned directly on the body; completion takes around 4 weeks with 1 to 2 fittings. Many clients begin with our made-to-measure line and experience there what individual fit and careful workmanship mean.
How do you recognise quality in a tailored suit?
The most important difference in quality lies in the canvas — the invisible framework of the jacket. In ready-to-wear, it is fixed to the cloth with adhesive and fused in a heat press. The result is stiff and cannot tolerate moisture: rain, perspiration or cleaning steam dissolve the glue, canvas and cloth separate, and bubbles form on the surface — an irreparable defect. Fine suits work instead with a horsehair canvas, sewn in loosely and flexible. In our made-to-measure line it is padded by machine in full-canvas construction — a clean, even result with noticeably more flexibility than any fused garment. The bespoke suit goes further still: here the tailor’s hand does the padding.
Hand-padding runs through the entire forepart, above all over the chest. Thousands of stitches join horsehair canvas and cloth, shaping the wearer’s individual chest contour directly into the canvas — every stitch forms part of the chest to the actual body. A machine cannot reproduce this; a sewing machine works uniformly, not client-specifically. Cloth and canvas remain mobile against each other; the suit does not stiffen, keeps adapting over time, and fits better the longer it is worn.
Further marks of a fine suit are genuine horn buttons and hand-sewn buttonholes — standard in full bespoke, optionally available in our made-to-measure line. You feel the difference most clearly when putting the jacket on: a well-made suit glides over the shoulders and settles against the upper body — with complete freedom of movement. Fine cloths need ease to show their effect; they are meant to flatter the body, not constrict it.
How is a tailored suit made?
Every commission begins with a personal conversation. Egon Brandstetter records your wishes and requirements, observes posture and movement, and takes precise measurements. Together we choose the right cloth — from more than 8,000 variations.
In made-to-measure we work with try-on garments — different jackets and trousers are combined and pinned to your figure. This shows directly on the body how cut and proportions work. Completion takes around 4 weeks with 1 to 2 fittings.
In full bespoke, everything is created from scratch: from your measurements we construct an individual pattern and make a trial garment, on which fit and proportions are refined at the first fitting. The forward fitting is held in the final cloth — the garment is already assembled, but only basted, so that final corrections to the pattern remain possible. All handwork then follows in the finishing — around 80 hours of work go into a two-piece suit. From first contact to collection takes 8 to 12 weeks.
Which cloths are available for tailored suits?
More than 8,000 cloth variations from renowned mills and merchants — among them Loro Piana, Scabal, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Fox Brothers, Drapers and Carnet. Worsted wool for everyday business — smooth, with a clean crease. Flannel and tweed for the colder months. Cashmere and silk blends when something special is called for. Light qualities such as fresco or tropical for summer.
Choosing the right cloth is often the most demanding step in the whole process. Occasion, season and personal style all play together — we advise you thoroughly.
Do you also make individual pieces such as jackets, waistcoats or trousers?
Yes. Alongside classic two- and three-piece suits we also make individual jackets, trousers, waistcoats and coats — in full bespoke or made-to-measure. Likewise formal wear: morning coat, dinner suit or tailcoat. For women we make masculine-cut pieces such as trouser suits and blazers as well as more fitted cuts — Egon Brandstetter trained as both a women’s and men’s tailor.
Since we archive every pattern, additions and repeat orders are possible at any time — even years later. Many clients build their wardrobe piece by piece this way.
What does a tailored suit or a tailor-made shirt cost?
A suit from our made-to-measure line starts at €1,500, a full bespoke suit at €5,800. The difference in price reflects the greater share of handwork and individual detail in the bespoke suit. Cloth quality and details such as hand-sewn buttonholes or horn buttons additionally influence the final price.
Tailor-made shirts start at €230. In a personal consultation we clarify which combination of cloth and finish makes sense for your needs.
Why is a tailored suit a worthwhile investment?
A suit in full-canvas construction keeps its shape for years — the horsehair canvas is sewn in loosely, not glued, and adapts to the wearer over time. Seam allowances make alterations possible if your measurements change. Around 80 hours of work go into a two-piece bespoke suit — material, working time and VAT make up a price every client can follow transparently.
We archive every pattern. Repeat orders, additions or a second suit from the same pattern are possible at any time — even years after the first commission. If you are looking for a way in, our made-to-measure line starts at €1,500 — full-canvas construction, the same cloth selection, and equally expert advice from Egon Brandstetter.
How long does the making take?
Our made-to-measure is completed in around 4 weeks with 1 to 2 fittings. For full bespoke we allow 8 to 12 weeks — the additional time goes into the trial garment, gradual refinement across 2 to 3 fittings, and around 80 hours of handwork.
Tailor-made shirts take around 4 weeks.
Do you offer an express service?
For made-to-measure suits and shirts we offer an express service within 10 working days — at a surcharge. In full bespoke, acceleration is possible only to a limited extent, as the process involves several fittings and around 80 hours of handwork. Depending on current commissions and our team’s workload, we can review what is feasible in individual cases. Talk to us — we will find the right solution for your timeframe.
How many fittings will I need?
In made-to-measure 1 to 2, in full bespoke 2 to 3. Appointments take 30 to 60 minutes each.
In full bespoke, the first fitting is held in the trial garment — a specially made try-on piece on which fit and proportions are refined. Each further fitting sharpens the pattern — from the proportions down to details such as pocket position and lapel width. Egon Brandstetter judges the fit personally and makes corrections directly on the body.
Appointments are arranged flexibly — we are also there for you on Saturdays.
What sets you apart from other tailors in Berlin?
Since 2008 we have been making full bespoke suits in our atelier in Berlin-Mitte — garments constructed to measure from scratch and finished by hand in our own house. The terms ‘Maßschneider’ and ‘Maßanzug’ are not protected in Germany; many businesses use them for made-to-measure, the adjustment of proven block patterns to individual measurements. We are among the few houses in Berlin practising bespoke in the classic sense — pattern construction, trial garment and finishing all take place in our atelier at Chausseestraße 50. As the only private training atelier for men’s tailors in Berlin, we also pass this knowledge on to the next generation.
Egon Brandstetter brings more than 30 years of experience and advises every client personally. This experience also flows into our made-to-measure line — with the same standards for cut, style and workmanship. Our atelier is open to view from the street. During your consultation you sit at the cutting table, in the middle of the atelier where your garment is made — advised directly by the tailor.
Do I need an appointment?
Please arrange an appointment with us, as we always set aside 60 to 90 minutes for the first consultation. Egon Brandstetter personally discusses your requirements for the garment and takes your measurements. Our atelier is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 10:30 am to 6 pm.
Do you also make garments for women?
Our focus is classic men’s tailoring — but Egon Brandstetter trained as both a women’s and men’s tailor and brings long experience in both crafts. For women we make masculine-cut pieces, such as trouser suits and blazers, as well as more fitted cuts. In a personal consultation we work out together what suits your style and occasion.
Do you offer gift vouchers?
We offer personalised gift vouchers — either for a chosen amount or for a specific garment such as a suit or shirt. The recipient books a consultation and chooses cloth and details to their own taste.
I have no experience with tailoring — is that a problem?
Many of our clients are stepping into a tailor’s atelier for the first time. In the first consultation, Egon Brandstetter takes 60 to 90 minutes to explain cloth selection, workmanship and fit, and works out with you what suits your occasion and style. If you would like to get to know tailoring first, made-to-measure is often the way in — from €1,500, in full-canvas construction, with the same cloth selection as full bespoke and equally expert advice from Egon Brandstetter.
What does a tailor-made wedding suit cost?
We make a two-piece wedding suit in made-to-measure from €1,500, in full bespoke from €5,800. On request we put together the complete outfit — suit, waistcoat, shirt and matching accessories from a single source.
How much lead time do I need for a wedding suit?
For a full bespoke suit we recommend beginning the consultation at least six months before the wedding. In made-to-measure, one to two months are usually enough — though in the wedding season you should allow a little more, leaving room for cloth selection, fittings and a final trial run before the day. If time is short, we offer an express service for made-to-measure by arrangement — completion within 10 working days.
What does the groom wear — suit, stroller, morning coat, dinner suit or tailcoat?
For most daytime weddings, a two- or three-piece suit is the right choice. For something more formal there is the stroller (Stresemann) — the classic semi-formal day ensemble with striped trousers. The most formal daywear is the morning coat, traditionally worn at particularly festive ceremonies. In the evening, the dinner suit takes over as the black-tie standard; at the highest level of formality, the tailcoat with white tie. We make all of these in full bespoke or made-to-measure and discuss in the first consultation which wardrobe suits your occasion.
Can you dress the entire wedding party?
Of course. Whether groom, groomsmen or father of the bride — we make sure everyone involved is dressed for the occasion. Sometimes that means coordinated suits or waistcoats for the groomsmen, a deliberately placed accent colour, or playful variations — say, a colour sequence across the garments. With our style advice and a wide selection of accessories, we find the right direction for everyone. For larger groups we recommend arranging a joint appointment early, so we can coordinate the making.
Can I wear my wedding suit after the wedding?
Of course — and we pay attention to exactly that during the consultation. A tailor-made suit is built to last and can be worn for business and formal occasions alike. We keep your pattern on file — alterations for changed measurements, a second pair of trousers or another suit from the same pattern remain possible years later.
